Yes, if they think the placement would not benefit the child.

Can foster parents adopt a foster child?

If the child can't return home or be placed with other relatives, foster parents may be considered as adoptive parents. In some states, they're even given preference if the child becomes available for adoption.

Are foster parents "paid" for taking care of foster children?

Foster parents do not receive compensation for providing care. They do, however, receive monthly reimbursement that helps cover the cost of the child's food, clothing, and other basic needs.

Is there a standard approval process for becoming a foster parent?

In most states, the approval process involves interviews and visits to the applicant's home. In some states, the applicant must also complete a special training program.

Where can I receive more information about becoming a foster parent?

Check the White Pages of you phone book (under the name of your state) for a listing such as "Department of Social Services," "Department of Human Services," or "Division of Youth and Family Services."

Or, check for a phone number of your county's Children's Protective Services or United Way. Or, on the web visit www.nfpainc.org.
