Post Traumatic Stress Disorder AFTER Childbirth - When we think of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, we think of a war veteran who witnessed unspeakable acts or catastrophic events such as September 11th. What we don't think of are women who have given birth. For approximately 7% of women, the birth experience itself is so traumatic, that they now suffer Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) After Childbirth.
Postpartum Support Services What IS a Doula? The word Doula is derived from the Greek word-meaning servant or handmaiden. It was coined by Dana Raphael, a medical anthropologist, in her 1973 book, The Tender Gift, which told of the benefits of woman teaching woman about mothering. Today, a Doula can be considered part nurse, part coach and part wise aunt with 12 children. Find local postpartum support services in your area.
